Feud Between Online Casinos and Land Based Casinos in Denmark
Danske Spil, Denmark’s monopoly operator, is moving forward with its restructuring program of online casinos and gambling sites, even with the delay of the regulation of online gaming sites in the country. The delay arose due to several complaints filed by the Danish land casinos and more recently the European Commission (EC) launched a formal investigation into whether Denmark’s proposed tax rate for online operators would give these companies an unfair competitive advantage over land-based casinos in the country.
According to Hans Christian Madsen, the chairman and chief executive of Danske Spil, a strategic decision has already been taken to split the monopoly into three separate divisions. One of these divisions will deal with the products that will participate in the liberalized market in competition with private operators. These types of products include online sports betting, poker and casinos offering games such as slots and video slots. Another division is set to handle the products for which the Danish government has retained monopoly including lottery, scratch games, horse racing and bingo. The third and last division will handle the 5,000 video lottery terminals owned by Danske Spil.
Madsen has also discussed the hot topic of the dispute over taxation raised by the land based casino operators. These days the land based operators are taxed at 41% and the proposed online gambling regulation will look into applying a 20% tax to online operators . The land based operators are looking for tax rates reduction , which they want to be similar with the online rates. However, Madsen has ruled this out and said, “Never in the history of Denmark have we seen taxation lowered.” He added that he did not agree with these complaints and that the existing 41% taxation of land-based operators in the country will definitely not be brought in line with the proposed online gaming levy of 20%. Madsen has said that land casino gambling are completely different from online gambling and that there’s simply no comparison.
